On April 24, students from Gonet Academy’s Occupational Health and Safety Management and Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management programs undertook high-impact educational tour to the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, one of the nation’s most critical industrial operations.

At the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, students from the Academy’s Comprehensive Professional Program (CPP) and Foundation Certificate Program (FCP) in Occupational Health and Safety Management (Afternoon Class) gained rare, firsthand exposure to one of the country’s most complex and high-risk operational environments.

The hydropower facility—the nation’s primary source of hydroelectric power and a symbol of post-war reconstruction—offered students a unique opportunity to observe how water is transformed into electricity through turbine-driven systems before being transmitted across the national grid.

More importantly, the visit brought classroom safety concepts to life.

Participants encountered real-world occupational hazards, including high-voltage systems, heavy rotating machinery, confined spaces, and high-noise environments. Under the guidance of industry experts, they observed strict safety protocols, hazard control measures, and operational discipline in action.

“A classroom can teach you the theory, but this experience shows you the reality,” one student noted. “You begin to understand why safety standards are not optional—they are critical.”

From safety inductions to controlled movement within restricted zones, the exercise demonstrated the practical application of risk management principles, reinforcing a safety-first mindset essential for modern industry.

The visit provided a full-cycle view of cement manufacturing—from raw material sourcing and processing to final distribution—highlighting the intricate coordination required across procurement, production, warehousing, and logistics systems.

Students observed real-time production monitoring through advanced control systems, quality assurance processes in laboratory settings, inventory management and warehouse operations, automated packaging and dispatch systems and documentation and tracking procedures critical to supply chain accountability.

The experience underscored the importance of efficiency, precision, and coordination in large-scale industrial operations.

“Seeing the entire value chain in motion helps us connect concepts like demand forecasting and inventory control to real business outcomes,” a participant shared.
