Gonet Academy’s Students Tour Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant
–Empowering Future Professionals Through Experiential Learning
Gonet Academy continues to reinforce its position as the country’s leading professional development institution, delivering industry-focused training that bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world application. Through a series of structured field visits to key national institutions, the Academy is equipping its students with practical competencies essential for navigating today’s complex work environments.
On April 24, students from Gonet Academy’s Occupational Health and Safety Management and Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management programs undertook high-impact educational tour to the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, one of the nation’s most critical industrial operations.
At the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, students from the Academy’s Comprehensive Professional Program (CPP) and Foundation Certificate Program (FCP) in Occupational Health and Safety Management (Afternoon Class) gained rare, firsthand exposure to one of the country’s most complex and high-risk operational environments.
The hydropower facility—the nation’s primary source of hydroelectric power and a symbol of post-war reconstruction—offered students a unique opportunity to observe how water is transformed into electricity through turbine-driven systems before being transmitted across the national grid.
More importantly, the visit brought classroom safety concepts to life.
Participants encountered real-world occupational hazards, including high-voltage systems, heavy rotating machinery, confined spaces, and high-noise environments. Under the guidance of industry experts, they observed strict safety protocols, hazard control measures, and operational discipline in action.
“A classroom can teach you the theory, but this experience shows you the reality,” one student noted. “You begin to understand why safety standards are not optional—they are critical.”
From safety inductions to controlled movement within restricted zones, the exercise demonstrated the practical application of risk management principles, reinforcing a safety-first mindset essential for modern industry.
The visit provided a full-cycle view of cement manufacturing—from raw material sourcing and processing to final distribution—highlighting the intricate coordination required across procurement, production, warehousing, and logistics systems.
Students observed real-time production monitoring through advanced control systems, quality assurance processes in laboratory settings, inventory management and warehouse operations, automated packaging and dispatch systems and documentation and tracking procedures critical to supply chain accountability.
The experience underscored the importance of efficiency, precision, and coordination in large-scale industrial operations.
“Seeing the entire value chain in motion helps us connect concepts like demand forecasting and inventory control to real business outcomes,” a participant shared.
The field visits reflect Gonet Academy’s core philosophy-learning must extend beyond the classroom.
By immersing students in real operational environments, the Academy ensures that graduates are not only knowledgeable but also industry-ready—capable of applying technical concepts, adapting to workplace realities, and contributing meaningfully from day one.
The hands-on approach enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills, professional confidence and workplace readiness, understanding of safety, compliance, and operational standards and ability to translate theory into actionable insights.
Beyond individual learning outcomes, Gonet Academy’s work carries broader implications for Liberia’s development.
As the country continues to expand its infrastructure, energy systems, and industrial base, the demand for skilled professionals in safety management, logistics, and technical operations is rapidly increasing.
By producing a pipeline of competent, practice-ready professionals, Gonet Academy is supporting workforce development across key sectors, enhancing productivity and operational efficiency in industry, promoting a culture of safety and compliance, and contributing to economic growth and national resilience.
The Academy’s collaboration with leading institutions such as the Liberia Electricity Corporation and Cemenco further strengthens the link between education and industry, ensuring that training remains relevant, responsive, and impactful.
Operating under Gonet Africa and accredited by the Ministry of Education, Gonet Academy has established itself as a premier center for professional excellence in Liberia.
Its emphasis on experiential learning, industry partnerships, and practical skill development continues to set it apart as a transformative force in education.
As Liberia advances toward a more industrialized and resilient economy, initiatives like these are not just educational exercises—they are investments in the country’s future.
Through every field visit, every training session, and every graduate, Gonet Academy is helping to build a workforce capable of driving sustainable development and safeguarding progress.
